Niue has been a reliable vehicle for high-finish collector gold since the 2000s, its Cook Islands-adjacent legal framework making it attractive to European bullion distributors — most of these Klimt pieces moved through Austrian and German wholesale channels almost immediately after release. Klimt himself died in February 1918 from a stroke, weeks into the Spanish flu pandemic, leaving several major canvases unfinished.
The 2018 release coincided with centenary commemorations of his death across Vienna.
