The F-117 Nighthawk entered service with the USAF in 1983 but its existence wasn't acknowledged publicly until 1988, making it one of the longest-kept open secrets in modern military aviation. Solomon Islands issued a wave of these aviation-themed commemoratives in the early 2000s, targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation — the islands had no meaningful connection to the aircraft.
One F-117 was lost over Serbia in March 1999, shot down by a Soviet-era SA-3 missile system whose operators had learned to exploit the aircraft's radar cross-section at specific approach angles.
