The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority was established in 1997, taking over currency functions from the Cayman Islands Currency Board. The D series, introduced from 2010, was the first issued entirely under CIMA's authority and incorporated updated security specifications — though for a jurisdiction of this size and economic profile, De La Rue's involvement was never in question; the islands have used them exclusively since the first dollar notes appeared in the early 1970s.

The CI dollar is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of CI$1 to US$1.20, a rate unchanged since 1974.
