The "Coronation Spoon" referenced here is the oldest piece of English royal regalia still used in a living ceremony — a 12th-century anointing instrument employed at every coronation since at least 1349. The 1978 Cayman issue marked the 25th anniversary of Elizabeth II's June 1953 coronation, one of several Commonwealth territories that produced ambitious large-format silver pieces for the jubilee. The Cayman Islands' coinage program in this period was frankly designed as much for the collector market as for any domestic monetary purpose.
