| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Barbados occupies the central field, featuring a quartered shield supported by a dolphin to the left and a pelican to the right, with a helmet and decorative mantling above. A scroll below the shield bears the national motto in the legend. The country name BARBADOS arcs along the upper rim, while the date 1986 appears in the exergue below the arms. The motto PRIDE AND INDUSTRY is inscribed on the ribbon beneath the shield. |

The 1986 Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh — the first time Scotland hosted — and were overshadowed by a widespread boycott organized in protest of the British government's refusal to impose sanctions on apartheid South Africa. Thirty-two nations withdrew, leaving the Games significantly diminished. Barbados was among the countries that did not boycott, and this issue was struck in that charged atmosphere.
KM#44a is the silver proof variant of a base-metal circulation issue, a pairing common to Caribbean commemorative programs of the period.
