The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority was established in 1997, taking over currency functions from the Currency Board that had operated since 1972. De La Rue's involvement with Cayman Islands currency goes back to the earliest issues; their grip on small British Overseas Territory contracts during this period was near-total.
