The An-225 Mriya — designed by the Antonov bureau in Kyiv and completed in 1988 — was built for a single original purpose: to carry the Soviet Buran space shuttle on its back. Only one airframe was ever finished and flown. Solomon Islands issued this piece in 2003 as part of a broader aviation commemorative program, at a moment when the Mriya had recently re-entered service after years of post-Soviet dormancy, having logged its first commercial cargo flight only in 2001.
