The Cayman Islands Currency Board was established by the Currency Law of 1971, and this note belongs to the inaugural series — the first banknotes issued specifically for the Cayman Islands as a distinct currency jurisdiction, replacing the use of Jamaican dollars. The timing mattered: Cayman had formally separated from the Jamaican administration in 1962, but monetary independence took another nine years to implement.
De La Rue printed the series under Anthony Buckley's design direction, the same period in which Buckley was producing royal portraits for numerous Commonwealth issues. The Cayman dollar was pegged to the US dollar at a rate of CI$1 to US$1.20, a rate that has held without alteration ever since — unusual stability for any currency introduced in the early 1970s.
