| Additional information |
The Endeavour's 1770 Pacific voyage was nominally a Royal Society expedition to observe the Transit of Venus from Tahiti — the astronomical pretext that got Cook his commission. The real sealed orders, opened only after leaving Tahiti, directed him to search for the theorized southern continent. He never found it, but the charting of New Zealand's coastline and the Australian eastern seaboard that followed were among the most consequential acts of navigation in the eighteenth century.
The 2020 date marks the 250th anniversary of that landfall at Botany Bay, April 1770.
