Australia's gold kangaroo bullion series has run continuously since 1987, making it one of the longer-lived sovereign bullion programs in the world. Unlike the original "Nugget" design concept it replaced, the kangaroo reverse has been updated annually — meaning no two calendar years share the same reverse die, a deliberate policy that has driven collector demand alongside pure bullion interest.
The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was introduced on Australian coinage in 1999 and remained the standard until superseded by Jody Clark's effigy in 2019.
