Australia's four-nines fine gold standard — .9999 purity — was adopted by the Perth Mint partly to undercut rival bullion programs, particularly Canada's Maple Leaf, which had held the purity benchmark since 1979. By the time this 2009 piece was struck, the Perth Mint had built a reputation for consistently achieving that threshold across high-volume production runs, something the Royal Canadian Mint had itself occasionally struggled to certify without qualification. The 2009 date places this coin squarely in the post-Lehman collapse period, when retail demand for fractional gold bullion surged sharply across Western markets.
