Australia resumed sovereign production in 1855 at the Sydney Mint — the first branch mint of the Royal Mint outside Britain — and the tradition has continued in various forms ever since. The Perth Mint's modern sovereign program revived that lineage, with the 2009 issues appearing in both standard and alternate portrait configurations during a period when the mint was aggressively expanding its bullion and numismatic gold output.
The "alternate version" designation refers to a variant obverse portrait arrangement produced for select markets, particularly aimed at collectors distinguishing it from the standard Ian Rank-Broadley effigy release of the same year.
