Australia struck its first sovereigns at the Sydney Mint in 1855, making 2005 the 150th anniversary this coin commemorates. The Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth branch mints collectively produced hundreds of millions of sovereigns for the British Empire, functioning as full legal tender across the sterling zone and circulating as far as India and the Levant. Australian branch mint sovereigns were often melted or absorbed into British gold reserves during the First World War.
The Royal Australian Mint struck this piece to the same 22-carat standard as the original 19th-century issues.
