The 65th anniversary of the Coronation falls in 2018 for a straightforward reason: Elizabeth II was crowned on 2 June 1953, making her the longest-reigning British monarch to have a coronation anniversary reach that figure. By 2018 she had already surpassed Victoria's record set in 2015. Perth's choice to mark the 65th rather than wait for the 70th reflects the mint's established pattern of issuing commemoratives at every five-year interval from the 60th onward — a commercial rhythm rather than a historically significant threshold. The fourth portrait, by Ian Rank-Broadley, had been in use since 1998.
