The charge at Beersheba on 31 October 1917 — carried out by the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade — is one of the few successful cavalry charges of the First World War, and almost certainly the last decisive one in history. The men rode into Ottoman rifle and artillery fire across roughly five kilometres of open ground, moving fast enough that defending gunners could not accurately calculate a lead distance. They reached the town's wells before the garrison could destroy them, securing water that the entire campaign in the Sinai and Palestine depended upon.
Perth issued this piece in the centenary year of that action, with mintage strictly limited to 2,500.
