Australia's platinum Koala series launched in 1988 as the Perth Mint's direct answer to the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle platinum programs, positioning Australia among the first sovereign issuers to commit to a dedicated annual platinum bullion coinage. The quarter-ounce denomination was the workhorse of the four-coin set, targeting mid-range bullion buyers who couldn't justify the full-ounce price.
Platinum was trading near historic highs in the late 1980s, briefly surpassing $600 USD per troy ounce in 1989 — making even this fractional piece a meaningful purchase at issue.
