The "Nugget" series launched in 1986 as Australia's answer to the Krugerrand, initially depicting actual gold nuggets found on Australian soil. By 1990, the kangaroo replaced the nugget motif entirely — a commercial decision driven by international market research suggesting the animal was more recognizable to foreign buyers than geological specimens. The Perth Mint, operating independently from the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, has issued these coins under its own authority since the series began.

KM#243 corresponds to the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait transition period, just before his effigy officially replaced the Raphael Maklouf third portrait across Commonwealth issues from 1998.
