Poland's baptism in 966 AD — the conversion of Mieszko I, almost certainly a political calculation to neutralize German missionary pressure and legitimize the Piast dynasty within the Christian European order — is treated by Polish historiography as the founding moment of the Polish state. The 1050th anniversary fell in 2016, and Poland mounted a substantial commemorative program around it. Niue's participation was purely a licensing arrangement; the coin was produced for the Polish collector market.
