Additional information

Liberia's Central Bank issued a sprawling series of gold "Double Eagle" pieces in the early 2000s, most bearing denominations bearing no relationship to the country's actual monetary system — the Liberian dollar circulated in paper form at roughly 50-to-1 against the US dollar at the time. These pieces were produced for the international collector market, not domestic use, and were distributed almost entirely through foreign wholesalers.

The five-nines (.99999) fineness is notable — finer than the standard .9999 used by most sovereign mints, a specification more commonly associated with the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf program.
