The Battle of Iwo Jima ran from February 19 to March 26, 1945 — 36 days of fighting that produced more Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipients than any other single engagement in the war. Of the roughly 70,000 Marines who landed, nearly 7,000 were killed. The island had no strategic value beyond its airstrips, which American planners calculated would save B-29 crews flying the round trip from the Marianas to Japan.
Cook Islands has been a prolific issuer of high-relief silver commemoratives under the New Zealand-administered currency arrangement that gives it the legal standing to produce legal tender issues of this kind.
