The Perth Mint's sovereign program continues a production lineage stretching back to 1899, when the branch mint first struck sovereigns under royal authority as part of Britain's global gold coinage network. This 2024 issue introduces Ian Rank-Broadley's first portrait of Charles III — the same effigy authorised for circulation coinage — marking the first regnal transition on Australian sovereigns since the Elizabeth II portrait was adopted in 1998.
Australia remains one of the few jurisdictions still producing sovereigns to the original 22-carat Hanoverian standard established in 1817.
