Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, which was established in 1971 to consolidate central banking and currency functions previously scattered across multiple government bodies. The MAS had, unusually, operated without issuing its own currency for most of its existence — banknote issuance remained with the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Singapore, a separate statutory body that was not merged into the MAS until 2002.
The hologram strip was among the earlier applications of that security feature on Singaporean currency, reflecting the MAS's consistent push toward advanced anti-counterfeiting technology through the 1990s.
