| Additional information |
William Tubman served as Liberia's president from 1944 until his death in 1971 — the longest presidency in the country's history. This coin was issued to mark his 75th birthday in 1970, the year before he died in office in London following surgery. Tubman's administration had opened Liberia to significant foreign investment under his "Open Door Policy," and commemorative gold issues like this one were partly directed at an international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
