The Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij was not a central bank — it was a trading and finance company chartered in 1824 by King William I specifically to revive Dutch colonial commerce after the Napoleonic disruptions. It held banking privileges in the Dutch East Indies for decades before those functions were eventually absorbed by De Javasche Bank. A private commercial entity issuing circulating currency is the core oddity here.
By 1890 the NHM's direct note-issuing role was already winding down. Surviving examples from this late period are correspondingly scarce.
