One of the earliest paper currency issues from Fiji, arriving just two years after Cakobau's confederate government established the short-lived Kingdom of Fiji. The Treasury had no printing infrastructure of its own, so S. T. Leigh & Co. of Sydney — primarily a commercial stationer and jobbing printer — supplied the notes. It was not a security printing house in any modern sense, and the resulting issues are correspondingly crude by contemporary colonial banking standards.
Three manuscript signatures were required per note: Smith, Clarkson, and Woods. That requirement reflects a deliberate control mechanism given the absence of any mechanical authentication. Signed examples with all three present and legible are the only properly issued ones.
