Qatar established its own currency in 1973 following the dissolution of the Qatar and Dubai Riyal, which itself had replaced the Gulf Rupee only eight years earlier. The Central Bank issued this series at independence as the new state moved to assert full monetary control after British withdrawal from the Gulf in 1971. The same design ran uninterrupted for 25 years — a notable span for a young nation navigating rapid oil-driven economic transformation.
