Andorra's gold coinage occupies a peculiar legal space — the principality has no central bank and for most of its history issued no currency at all, relying entirely on French francs and Spanish pesetas. Formal Andorran coinage only began in earnest in the 1980s, and the gold issues that followed were aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. The KM#279 is one such piece, struck to .999 fineness at a time when Andorra was still years away from its 2011 monetary agreement formally adopting the euro.
