Andorra's coinage authority in the early 1990s aggressively targeted the commemorative collector market, issuing a succession of Olympic-themed gold pieces tied to events in which Andorra had no competitive presence worth noting. The 1994 Lillehammer Games, commemorated here a year ahead of schedule, were the first Winter Olympics held under the post-1992 decision to stagger Summer and Winter cycles — a scheduling change by the IOC that inadvertently doubled the frequency of commemorative coin programs for small issuing states.
Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell and therefore co-Prince of Andorra from 1971 until his death in 2009.
