Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, a tenure that made him one of the longest-serving Co-Princes in Andorran history. The bishopric of Urgell has held co-sovereignty over Andorra since a treaty of 1278, making each sitting bishop a head of state by ecclesiastical appointment rather than election or heredity — an arrangement that remains constitutionally intact today, even after Andorra's 1993 constitution formalized parliamentary governance.
The jubilee being marked is his 20th anniversary in the role.
