The 1993 Andorran gold series commemorating the customs union marks the formal agreement that embedded Andorra into the European Community's customs territory — an arrangement that took effect July 1, 1991, after decades of the principality operating outside both Spanish and French customs frameworks entirely. Joan Martí i Alanis, Bishop of Urgell and therefore one of Andorra's two co-princes, was a direct signatory party to the negotiations.
The .583 fineness is atypical for European commemorative gold of the period, reflecting Andorran practice of issuing at 14-karat rather than the .900 standard favored elsewhere.
