Darfur's coinage is among the more unusual numismatic footnotes of the early 21st century — these pieces were issued by local authorities during the ongoing conflict that had already displaced millions and drawn international war crimes proceedings against Omar al-Bashir. Whether they circulated meaningfully, or functioned primarily as a political assertion of regional identity against Khartoum's authority, remains an open question. The X# catalog prefix places them squarely outside mainstream recognition.
