Puntarenas is one of Costa Rica's six provinces and the only one with coastline on both the Pacific and, via the Nicoya Peninsula, the Gulf of Nicoya. Provincial-themed coinage in Costa Rica's current circulating series was introduced progressively, with each denomination assigned a specific province — a design policy that replaced the older colón series carrying the portrait of Juan Mora Fernández. The 25 colones denomination had seen modest redesigns over the years before this issue.
KM#290 is among the more recent strikes from the Casa de Moneda de Costa Rica, which resumed domestic production after years of contracting minting to foreign facilities.
