Beschrijving voorzijde	Dark blue intaglio-printed note with an intricate guilloche border and corner numerals '25' repeated in each quadrant. At centre, a profile portrait vignette of Christopher Columbus faces left, set within an oval frame flanked by the large denomination numeral '25' on either side. The upper portion carries the national title within a curved banner, with 'CERTIFICADO DE ORO' below and the date law inscription 'LEY DE 5 NOVIEMBRE 1896'; two serial number fields appear at upper left and right. Text panels in smaller letterpress script occupy the left and right flanks, with the denomination 'VEINTICINCO COLONES' in bold type along the lower centre, and the place and date 'SAN JOSE ENERO 1, 1897' at the very bottom. Diagonal 'SPECIMEN' overprints appear at lower left and right.

Beschrijving keerzijde	Printed entirely in dark blue, the reverse is dominated by a large bold guilloche underprint carrying the denomination 'VEINTICINCO COLONES' across the centre, with the Costa Rican national coat of arms set within a central medallion. Ornate lathe-work panels fill all four corners, each bearing the numeral '25', while two rectangular text cartouches at left and right carry the inscriptions regarding acceptance at public revenue offices and payment of taxes. A horizontal text panel along the lower centre states the redemption clause referencing the Banco de Costa Rica, with the printer's imprint visible at the very bottom.
