| Obverse description | The large numeral '25' dominates the central field, with the denomination legend 'COLONES' inscribed below in bold capital letters. A raised inner ring frames the central design, decorated with small circular and rectangular ornamental devices at regular intervals. The secondary legend 'BANCO CENTRAL DE COSTA RICA' arcs above the numeral within the inner ring, while the primary legend 'REPÚBLICA DE COSTA RICA' arcs around the outer rim in large raised letters. The field is deeply recessed and darkened, providing strong contrast against the polished nickel-brass legends and devices. |

Costa Rica's Banco Central has intermittently issued colorized circulating coinage since the early 2000s, a practice more common among commemorative programs in smaller economies where the collector market subsidizes production costs. The Guanacaste Province issue belongs to a regional series celebrating Costa Rica's seven provinces, a program with no particular political urgency behind it — straightforward cultural promotion through numismatic channels.
Guanacaste was annexed from the Federation of Central America in 1824, following a local plebiscite — the province's residents voted to join Costa Rica rather than Nicaragua, a decision still marked by Guanacaste Day on July 25.
