Obverse description The second national coat of arms of Costa Rica occupies the central field, depicting three volcanic mountain ranges above a valley, two sailing ships on the Pacific and Atlantic oceans flanking the mountains, a rising sun in the upper left, and seven five-pointed stars arranged in an arc above the crest representing the seven provinces. The arms are enclosed within an oval cartouche framed by decorative branches. The legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA arcs above and AMERICA CENTRAL below the shield. The date of issue appears in the lower exergue beneath the coat of arms.
