The magnetic brass-plated steel variant replaced an earlier non-magnetic composition as part of a broader Central American move toward cheaper, vending-machine-compatible alloys in the mid-2000s. Costa Rica's colón had lost so much purchasing power by this point that the 25-colón piece was barely worth the cost of its own production — a fiscal absurdity that drove the composition change as much as any engineering consideration.
