| Obverse description | The obverse features the second coat of arms of Costa Rica prominently centered in the field, depicting three volcanoes rising above a coastal plain with a merchant vessel on the sea below and a rising sun in the background. The shield is flanked by laurel branches and surmounted by a scroll bearing the legend AMERICA CENTRAL, with seven stars representing the seven provinces arranged in an arc above the shield interior. The circular outer legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA runs along the upper periphery, and the date appears at the bottom of the field. A fine dentilated border encircles the entire design. |

The magnetic brass-plated steel variant replaced an earlier non-magnetic composition as part of a broader Central American move toward cheaper, vending-machine-compatible alloys in the mid-2000s. Costa Rica's colón had lost so much purchasing power by this point that the 25-colón piece was barely worth the cost of its own production — a fiscal absurdity that drove the composition change as much as any engineering consideration.
