Bhutan's 1974 coinage series was issued to coincide with the coronation of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who ascended the throne at age eighteen following the death of his father Jigme Dorji Wangchuck in 1972. The series marked a deliberate effort to modernize Bhutanese coinage after decades of irregular, hand-struck issues that had circulated alongside Indian rupees — the currency most Bhutanese actually used for daily commerce.
The Royal Mint in London struck these pieces under contract, a detail that distinguishes this transitional issue from later domestic production.
