When Germany occupied the Netherlands in May 1940, the colonial monetary system faced an immediate crisis: coin production at Utrecht halted, and Suriname needed circulating silver. The solution was to strike these pieces at the Philadelphia Mint under a wartime arrangement with the Dutch government-in-exile.
