The design, executed by Renata Gordon, employs fluid, organic lines to merge portraiture with natural imagery, symbolizing Kanakaʻole's lifelong dedication to preserving hula, chant, and the natural environment of Hawaiʻi. The inscription E hō mai ka ʻike, meaning 'granting the wisdom,' references the role of hula and oli (chant) as vehicles for cultural preservation. The upper legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the rim, with E PLURIBUS UNUM and the denomination 25¢ also present in the field. The honoree's name EDITH KANAKAʻOLE appears prominently in the design. |

Edith Kanakaʻole was a Native Hawaiian composer, chanter, and kumu hula whose preservation of traditional oli and mele forms during the mid-twentieth century is credited with anchoring the Hawaiian cultural renaissance that followed. She died in 1979, just before that movement fully crested. The silver version of this quarter was struck for collector sets only — no .999 fine pieces entered circulation, which went out in copper-nickel clad.
