Dr. Mary Edwards Walker remains the only woman to have received the Medal of Honor, awarded in 1865 for her service as a surgeon during the Civil War — and then rescinded in 1917 when Congress narrowed eligibility to combat roles. She refused to return it and wore it daily until her death in 1919. President Carter restored the award posthumously in 1977.
Her inclusion in the American Women Quarters Program, authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, placed her among a five-coin annual series running 2022 through 2025.
