Obverse description Printed in dark red on cream paper, the note bears the issuer's name 'SUTTON & STEWART' across the upper central field with a small engraved vignette of a building flanked by numeral '25' counters enclosed in ornate lathe-work panels at upper left and right. The large letterpress legend 'TWENTY FIVE CENTS' dominates the lower central portion, with a redemption clause below and a hand-signed authorization across the lower register, all set within a plain ruled border.
Obverse lettering 25 25 SUTTON & STEWART, pay to Bearer, TWENTY FIVE CENTS When presented in sums of One or more Dollars. No. Indiana, Pa, Dec. 18, 1862 Sutton, Marshall + Stewart HARRIS PRINTER 4th & VINE PHILA.
