Scotty's Inc. was a Florida-based home improvement chain that operated its own scrip — a promotional currency redeemable in-store rather than a banking instrument in any formal sense. Having the American Bank Note Company produce it was a deliberate credibility play; ABNC's engraved work carried an association with sovereign currency that gave the scrip a weight it had no legal right to claim.
Whether this constitutes a legitimate notaphilic collectible or an elaborate coupon is a debate the hobby has never quite settled.
