Westarctica is a micronation claiming the Unclaimed Land of Marie Byrd Land in Antarctica — territory that falls outside the Antarctic Treaty System's direct governance framework. Travis McHenry established it in 2001 after identifying a genuine loophole in the 1959 Treaty, and the coinage program followed years later as part of a broader effort to establish institutional legitimacy. These pieces were never intended for actual exchange; Pine Island, referenced here, is a major glacier whose accelerating ice loss has made it one of the most closely monitored bodies of ice on Earth.
