Co-operative store trade tokens and scrip issued in paper form were common across Maritime Canada through the mid-twentieth century, allowing member-shareholders to receive credit against purchases without the co-op tying up coin reserves. The Northside D.C. Co-op in Fredericton fits squarely into this tradition — "D.C." almost certainly denoting a District Co-operative affiliation rather than a specific founding name, though the organization left a thin documentary trail.
Paper scrip at this denomination was typically redeemable only at the issuing store, making surviving examples genuinely local artifacts rather than circulating currency in any meaningful sense.
