Series 461 MPCs were issued starting in September 1946 as the first postwar military scrip, replacing the yellow-seal dollar notes used during the war. The system was designed to limit black market activity by allowing the Army to call in and replace the entire currency series without warning — a "conversion" that left any unauthorized holders with worthless paper overnight.

Tudor Press, a Boston commercial printer, was an unusual choice for currency work. Series 461 remains the only MPC series they produced.
