25 Cents Louisiana State Penitentiary

Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola issued its own scrip currency for use within the prison — a closed economic system that allowed inmates to make purchases at the commissary without handling official U.S. currency. This was standard practice at large American penal institutions through much of the twentieth century, and Angola, one of the country's largest maximum-security prisons, ran one of the more documented versions of such systems.

The pink tinting on this denomination served a functional purpose: color-coding by value reduced the possibility of scrip being altered or substituted within the facility.
