25 Cents Jefferson City; Department of Corrections

Prison scrip issued by the Missouri Department of Corrections occupies a genuinely odd corner of notaphily — these pieces functioned as internal canteen currency, restricting inmates to an in-house economy that prevented the accumulation of U.S. currency inside the facility. Jefferson City's correctional complex, one of Missouri's oldest active prison sites, used denominated scrip well into the latter half of the twentieth century before electronic account systems made paper tokens obsolete.

Survivorship is largely accidental. Scrip was not saved by design.
