The "IND:IMP:" abbreviation — standing for Indiae Imperator, Emperor of India — disappeared from Canadian coinage after 1947, when Indian independence made the title untenable. The Royal Canadian Mint had already prepared 1948-dated dies, but with the title's removal requiring a complete redesign, production lagged badly. To cover the gap, the Mint struck large quantities of 1947-dated coins with a tiny maple leaf after the date, a makeshift solution to indicate they were actually struck in 1948.
