In 1937, as the Royal Canadian Mint prepared new coinage for George VI's reign following Edward VIII's abdication, pattern strikes were produced in various experimental compositions before the standard silver alloy was confirmed for circulation. Brass was among the materials tested. These special strikes were never intended for public release and were produced in extremely limited numbers for internal evaluation and presentation purposes.
Charlton reference DC-22 places this among a small, well-documented family of 1937 pattern issues — but surviving examples remain exceptionally rare outside institutional collections.
